SSL * ("Secure Sockets Layer") is a transmission protocol that ensures greater security during data transfer. While data, such as passwords, is transmitted in plain text, SSL transmits encrypted data, thus they can't be read automatically.
Encryption is important for instance in foreign wireless networks within public places. Here, you basically shouldn't register with pages without an HTTPS connection because otherwise the data (passwords, etc.) can be read by other people, too.
Even without that knowledge it is generally a good idea to use SSL in order to provide some protection for the password transmission to one's users. Quite a few people use the same password for many accounts and isn't always obvious how and where there has been a hack.
One basic thing is going to be changed to the 1.1.2017. Google will proceed with Chrome to mark pages with forms, including unencrypted transferred data, as unsafe. That looks as follows, taken the example for a login into Burning Board 4:

However, this is just the beginning because Google leaves the door open for future instructions appearing even more striking, that might look like this:

Now the question arises for administrators whether this doesn't have a negative affect on new members. It can be quite daunting to register if one is confronted directly with the note that the data isn't safe on a page. Especially if that isn't the case in other forums.
It is assumed that the other browser developers will follow suit with a similar note. This is speculative, however, as well as the assumption that unsafe sites in the Google ranking could in the future be disadvantaged. Nevertheless, this isn't excluded as it would be the next logical step to proceed in that way.
SSL certificates were previously reserved for server operators, but it is now possible for many providers (for example, HostEurope or ALL INC COM) to protect webspace with SSL. SSL also not necessarily entails additional costs, with Let's encrypt there's a way to get free certificates:

Anyone who hasn't dealt so far with the topic, should contemplate it soon because there is no longer a real reason to run a forum unencrypted. Apart from security aspects, pages transmitted via HTTPS are considered to load quicker.

SSL* ("Secure Sockets Layer") ist ein Übertragungsprotokoll das für mehr Sicherheit bei der Datenübertragung sorgt. Während bei normalen Verbindungen Daten, wie Passwörter, im Klartext übertragen werden, überträgt SSL die Daten verschlüsselt, sie sind also nicht ohne weiteres einsehbar.
Eine Verschlüsselung ist zum Beispiel in fremden WLan-Netzwerken an öffentlichen Plätzen wichtig, hier sollte man sich grundsätzlich nicht bei Seiten ohne HTTPS-Verbindung anmelden da die Daten (Passwörter usw.) sonst von anderen Leuten mitgelesen werden können.
Es ist also auch so schon grundsätzlich eine gute Idee SSL einzusetzen um seinen Mitgliedern einen gewissen Schutz bei der Passwortübertragung zu bieten. Nicht wenige Leute verwenden das selbe Passwort für viele Accounts und nicht immer ist offensichtlich wie und wo es zu einem Hack gekommen ist.
Zum 1.1.2017 ändert sich eine grundlegende Sache. Google geht in Chrome dazu über Seiten mit Formularen, die Daten unverschlüsselt übertragen, entsprechend als unsicher zu kennzeichnen. Das sieht, am Beispiel eines Logins in Burning Board 4, wie folgt aus:

Es kann durchaus abschreckend wirken sich auf einer Seite zu registrieren wenn man direkt damit konfrontiert wird das die Daten nicht sicher sind. Vor allem dann wenn das bei anderen Foren nicht der Fall ist.
Es ist davon auszugehen das die anderen Browserhersteller mit einem ähnlichen Hinweis nachziehen werden. Das ist jedoch spekulativ ebenso wie die Annahme das unsichere Seiten im Google-Ranking künftig benachteiligt werden könnten. Ausgeschlossen ist dies jedoch nicht, es wäre nur der nächste logische Schritt das so umzusetzen.
Waren SSL-Zertifikate früher Serverbetreibern vorbehalten ist es mittlerweile, bei vielen Anbietern (zum Beispiel HostEurope oder ALL-INKL COM), auch möglich Webspace mit SSL zu schützen.
SSL ist auch nicht zwangsläufig mit Zusatzkosten verbunden, mit Lets’s Encrypt gibt es eine Möglichkeit kostenlose Zertifikate zu erhalten:
letsencrypt.orgWer sich bis jetzt nicht mit dem Thema auseinander gesetzt hat, sollte das bald ins Auge fassen denn einen richtigen Grund ein Forum unverschlüsselt zu betreiben gibt es heute nicht mehr. Über die Sicherheit hinaus sollen die Seiten, über HTTPS übertragen, auch schneller geladen werden sollten.

1. Download the installation archive onto your computer
2. Extract the archive
3. Upload the files "install.php" and "WCFSetup.tar.gz" to your webserver
4. Start the installation by navigating your browser to the file "test.php"
